Sheryl posed a question to my question and the answer kind of turned into a post:
I don't know. Relationships of any kind can be tricky. I've seen people who were apparently happily married get divorced after 30 or more years together. Then I've seen obviously toxic relationships go on for the duration. I don't know if I can say that I've learned anything about relationships other than that some last and some don't.
As far as online relationships, I'd say Karen provides some good standard rules of thumb *digs around link drawer*....oh here it is. They'd work for "meat space" too I'd think. Karen and I have referred to one another as "family". Started with a Luke and Leia gag in one or the other's comment stream and kind of stuck. We have a little bit in common. We have, I think, the same slightly twisted sense of humor. We have children around the same age. We have the same mad love of Annie Lennox (and beer). Karen lives in the Bay Area, and I am insanely envious of anyone who lives in the Bay Area. Would we get along in meat space? I have no idea. She might hate the fact that I talk while chewing and I might not like her brand of cigars.
But I did meet George and Judi recently and we got along swimmingly - though who couldn't get along with George; he's the Internet Godfather. Before meeting face to face, Judi and I had "known" each other for the better part of a decade. Collaborated, commiserated and celebrated. So yeah, I think these friendships are "real." Whatever that is. Same could be said of Karsh, or Cecily, or RPM (though I'm sure there would be hair pulling if we ever met) or even you. Of practically anyone in my neighborhood actually (well, except maybe Stu; though I hear he's a very good writer).
Will these relationships last? Who knows? But I'm enjoying them in the meantime.
Uhm, I don't know if I even answered your question.

My buddy Alden gifted me with $30 worth of iTunes for my birthday and I've been rationing the purchases like it's
digital gold. Picked up "Return To Forever" a little over a week ago. And then Cannonball. And just now downloaded 3 cuts from Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings, inspired by a pic George posted a while back.Loving "My Man Is A Mean Man", can't stop listening to "What If We Stopped Paying Taxes." It's like "Soul Brother #1" never left.
George is the man.
Thanks Alden. Thanks George.
I associate with the coolest people.
Gil and I were separated at birth. Except he was the cooler and smarter twin with a much better sense of comic timing (I mean Gracie Allen timing) and of his place in the world. But other than that, same twisted sense of humor, same love of "funny books", same taste in music (especially all things Funkadelic).
Gil is peace of mind and satire. Gil understands irony but he doesn't let it bother him. Gil is Cosby before he was America's Dad, back when he was Coz.
Ah judi... with a small "j":
- Long distance therapist.
- Patron saint of goading. "It'll be fun," she says. "You can do a novel in a month." Three years later and I'm just about finished.
- Pope of the Russian River.
She should post "Tumor Diary" here.
Let see who I can scare up next....
So the guy kneeling in the photo below just accepted an invitation to Vox. I owe Dave a lot. Got me reading the Post (Washington) and The Times (New York). Got me to really thinking about political discourse instead of just spouting off what I thought I heard somebody else say. Took me home on the weekends for soft shell crabs and kitchen table debate. Introduced me to Chuck Brown ("Go-Go Swing Live!") and Rolling Rock.
Yeah Dave, I'm putting you on front street.
