Evidently NPR is doing a series on War Writings. This morning's interview is with Somolian novelist Nuruddin Farah who's been in exile for some time for - as he puts it - criticizing the Somolian government. Not the first dissident - African or otherwise - who has been so sanctioned. But for the first time this morning I heard an African author place blame on Africans, as well as the legacy of European colonialism, for Africa's problems. I recognize that I've lead a cloistered life and that I'm not particularly bright but this struck me. I've thought as much for a while now, but labeled it as my own naivete at work. I'm no Africa scholar by any means. Howeve, it dehumanizes Africans, in my view, to categorically paint them the victim. The knee jerk in me blanches at being mistaken as a Neo-con (shades of Armstrong Williams) and let's be honest, I'm an American which presupposes that I'm intellectually lazy.
But enough with the hand wringing. I need another cup of coffee and you need to get to reading.
